In addition, he is among the leading surgeons in Israel in the correction of chest wall deformities (Pectus Excavatum, Pectus Carinatum) using the Nuss and Abramson methods, and has performed hundreds of surgeries in this field in Israel and around the world.
Beyond his clinical activities, Dr. Abu Akar contributed greatly to the Israeli Association of Thoracic Surgery – he served as treasurer and then as secretary of the society for several years, initiated and organized national and international conferences in Israel and abroad, and strengthened academic and clinical collaborations with international centers.
At the academic level, Dr. Abu Akar has published dozens of articles in the international medical literature, written chapters in professional books, and lectured at prestigious conferences around the world.

His vision is to combine surgical excellence, technological innovation, and a personal human touch, from diagnosis to full recovery. Under his leadership, the Thoracic Surgery Unit at Wolfson has developed into a national and international center of excellence in the field of minimally invasive surgery.
Dr. Firas Abu Akar is a specialist in thoracic surgery and director of the thoracic surgery unit at Wolfson Medical Center.
Graduated in medicine and specialized in thoracic surgery at Shaare Zedek Hospital in Jerusalem. Completed an international fellowship in Shanghai, China, under the guidance of world leaders in the field: Prof. Diego Gonzalez-Reivas, Prof. Jiang Lei, and Prof. Zhou Yuming – world leaders in Uniportal VATS surgery. In addition, he underwent unique training in Pectus surgery and correction of thoracic deformities in Istanbul, under the guidance of Prof. Mustafa Yuksel, who is considered one of the world's leading surgeons in this field.
Dr. Abu Akar is a pioneer in adopting the minimally invasive Uniportal VATS technique in Israel, and also applies it in children and adolescents, including highly complex surgeries. He lectures and instructs on this at conferences and workshops around the world, and serves as an international proctor for minimally invasive thoracic surgeries in Africa, Europe, and South America, with the aim of training new generations of surgeons and spreading the method globally. He has extensive experience in performing pulmonary segment resections (segmentectomies), including particularly complex cases, while ensuring the preservation of as much lung tissue as possible in patients with early-stage lung cancer. This approach is currently considered a precise oncological approach that combines oncological radicality with preservation of pulmonary function.
